Thank
You for your interest in my Wireless Network Solutions.
This page is dedicated to giving you all the information you
need to understand the basics of what a wireless network provides,
and you will also become educated on the procedures I do and
the experience you will have by using my services. I will keep
the terminology simple and will use common human language instead
of terms that only computer geek's know. For example, most computer
geek's like myself call wireless networks ="802.11a,b,g
or Wi-Fi technology". However I will just refer to Wireless
Network as "Wireless Network"
This
page contains information that compliments the diagrams that
are also on INTERNET & LANS/WANS
page. The reason why they compliment eachother, is because both
of these technologies are similar in what they are accomplishing,
except one is using cables and wires while the other is "WIRELESS"
"Let's
get you started with the BASICS"
Before
I explain my services and rates, let me just cover the basics
about what a NETWORK is all about whether it be wireless or
with cables. There are many ways you might hear a technician
describe what a network is and what it achieves. To keep it
simple and short to the point, "A Network is when you have
2 or more computers and you want them to share something. The
things that you can share are: High Speed Internet Access, Printers,
DVD/CD Players, Hard Drives and the data on them, etc, etc."
"The
Problem"
Most
buildings and office suites built nowadays are pre-wired in
every room with computer networking capability. If that business
ever decides to have a Network, it is very easy to deploy it.
The problem is some businesses have found themselves in a building
that has "NO" pre-wired networking capability. The
same thing with homes. Homes however have much less of a chance
of being pre-wired with networking capability because most homes
were built when the Internet was not even popular among common
households and consumers. Here in the Rio Grande Valley it has
barely been about 2 years that High Speed Internet has been
affordable and available to homes. Even new homes that are being
built today are not being offered to install the cable to make
them High Speed Internet ready. This is usually the case because
the future home owner is not aware of that option and does not
ask the construction company to install the appropriate cabling.
The point I'm trying to bring out is that before Wireless Networks
were available, the only choice you had was to hire someone
to go into your home or business and install the computer cable/wire
(CAT 5 cable). This is usually a hassle for the home owner or
business. Holes need to be drilled, someone had to go into the
ATTIC, damage could be done to the home/business, etc, etc.
There are some instances where a room can't be given a computer
cable jack just because of the way the home is designed, etc, etc.
"How
I can HELP YOU"
If
you have just read the above information and you feel that it
is describing the scenario that you are in, whether it is for
your home or business, I can HELP YOU.
With
my Wireless Network Service, I am providing you the freedom
of not being restricted to cables/ walls or specific locations
in your home/business. If you have a wife that is always redecorating
or re arranging your furniture, with a Wireless Network this
is not a problem. Just think about how the cordless phone changed
the phone industry and how convenient it has made things. If
you have a laptop, I promise that YOU will love the feeling
of walking around your home taking your laptop anywhere you
wish and browsing the internet at High Speed. I
have had many customers tell me how much they love the fact
they are now able to use their laptop on their bed or outside
near the pool at night. If your business has High Speed Internet
and if you also have High Speed Internet at your home, I can
configure your laptop where you are able to wirelessly use it
at both locations.
"The
Advantages and Disadvantages"
I
think you have a pretty good understanding of the advantages
and perhaps you have some "ideas" that I have not
even thought of. Wireless Networks are great, but just like
everything in life, there are disadvantages you may hear people
talk about. It is my duty to inform you of these disadvantages.
1st disadvantage: It is usually more expensive.
But a Wireless Network is actually cheaper compared to if you
hired someone to install the cable in your home or business,
and then hired me to do the networking portion. I try to make
it affordable for you by buying the bare minimum equipment that
your home or business needs. For a simple home/business where
there is open space and a few walls or no walls in between computers,
I can have a project completed starting at $280. But if the
environment is more complex, I have to spend more by getting
your hardware that adapts to your needs.
2nd
disadvantage: You may hear that there is no security out of
the box (defaults).
This is not really a problem with my installations due to the
fact that I have educated myself in how to install a secure
Wireless Network. I mention security only because people might
tell you that Wireless Networks are not secure and that anybody
can use your network. That is only true if a Wireless Network
was installed with no security configurations. The only way
a Wireless Network is not secure is when a home/ or business
owner goes to the store and buys the wireless network equipment
and does a plug and play installation (right out of the box).
What I mean by this is they just plug it in and it works. Even
though that sounds great because you don't have to hire someone
to install your network, the defaults on these plug and play
wireless networks installation are not secure. So if you do
have people telling you that it is not secure, they are kind
of correct. However tell them that you are dealing with Joey
Cepeda a certified technician. There are advanced procedures
that I use to secure your wireless network. Some of the security
parameters and steps I take is by enabling 128 bit encryption,
I change the plug and play defaults, and I also take the serial
numbers (MAC addresses) of your computers/laptops and program
your wireless network to only allow and authorize those specified
serial numbers to use the network. If you are receiving negative
feedback from your friends and peers about how a wireless network
is not secure, chances are that they do not fully understand
the Wireless Network technology and they themselves are not
educated on how to secure a wireless network. If Wireless Networks
were not able to be secure, do you really think hospitals and
banks would be using them? The answer once again is Wireless
Networks are able to be secure but the problem is that by "default"
out of the box they are not. I have come across a few homes/businesses
here in the Valley with Wireless Networks out of the box, with
"NO" security. When I ask them questions, sometimes
the home/business owner tells me that they bought the equipment
and installed it themselves to save money, and that they could
not understand the manual with all the technical jargon. The
result of course is a "default"plug and play network
installed out of the box which is not secure.
If you remember from the beginning of this paragraph, to me
security is not a disadvantage since I know how to secure a
Wireless Network. I have studied many hours on just this topic
alone and I am able to deploy secure Wireless Networks. If you
are wanting to read this from another source besides from me,

of that article lists the techniques that I use to secure Wireless
Networks)

Disadvantage: Your environment might not be wireless friendly.
Sometimes a Wireless Network might not work in your home/business
environment. This is very rare however and I have not come across
it personally in any of my installations. However I have heard
from some of my colleagues and friends that they have came across
rare scenarios where the Wireless Network does not work. So
I know it is just a matter of time for me to come across this
situation. The reason this could happen is that there may be
electromagnetic radio interference in your area, too many pipes
in your walls, or maybe your area was built on top of an Alien
UFO that crashed there many years ago. Of course the way I find
out if it works or not is after the installation. You are not
obligated for any payment if you are a victim of your environment
not compatible with Wireless Networks.
"Your
Wireless Network and Examples"
Like
mentioned earlier there are many ways you can utilize your wireless
network. Please take the time to view the diagrams that I have
on the bottom of this page. As you can see I can set up your
network to share files and data that is stored on different
computers. For example, lets say you have your main PC which
has your Microsoft Word documents. Then you have your laptop
which is wireless and you are wanting to work from your bed
or outside Patio. I can set it up where you can open the same
documents on any PC within your private network. The same thing
goes for your printers. For a home or business the same technique
applies, whether you have a family of 6 or a business of 10
employees, and if each of you have your own computer there is
no need to buy a printer for EVERY single computer. I can share
out the printer to all PCs. DVD, CD burners, palm devices, etc,
etc, networks will allow you to share. Of course if you don't
want that capability I will not enable it. Most homes/or businesses
just want a network to share the High Speed Internet and don't
care too much about sharing out hard drives, printers etc, etc
but I just wanted to let you know that I am able to provide
you those other sharing services.
Here is something that surprises most people because they didn't
know it existed! But did you know that if you have a gaming
entertainment console such as XBOX or PLAYSTATION 2, you can
use that over your High Speed Internet connection to play with
family and friends the same game? Yes it is possible and I can
make it happen for you, wirelessly or with wires! For example
say you and your cousin both have a game called HALO, well with
your High Speed Internet connection you can both play each other
no matter where you are at in the world.
Figure
#6 is what describes the most common household scenarios.
You probably already have High Speed Internet with a DSL or
Cable modem directly connected to one PC with cables, but you
have other computers in the house. What usually happens is I
connect the wireless access point/router to the cable modem
using the cable that is connected to the PC, and then I connect
your PC directly to the access point/router. Then the rest of
your computers, whether they are laptops or desktops, are installed
with the wireless network adapters.
For
businesses usually the T1/ cable/ or DSL modem is installed
in a demarc or wiring telephone electrical closet. I will first
attempt to install the wireless access point/router in that
same closet and see if the signal is strong enough to reach
your PCs, if it does not have good signal, then you have the
option of either having me install repeaters that carry the
signal to wherever you want, or we run a cable from the wiring
closet out to an area closer to where your computers are at.
